Elastomeric Mounts - When do you use them?
August 25th, 2011
Elastomeric isolation mounts and pads are used in a wide variety of applications including electronics equipment, engines and gensets, vehicle cab mounts, HVAC equipment and general industrial machinery.
Elastomeric compounds are extremely versatile. Elastomers cannot rust. Properly selected they can resist oil, most industrial chemicals, industrial temperatures and the effects of the weather such as sunlight (UV) and ozone. Molded-in metal structures are protected by coating or the elastomer itself.
Engineered elastomeric pads provide excellent mid-to-high frequency vibration attenuation as base mounts in compression. They are economical and can be tailored to the application in the field. Typical uses include air compressors, business machines, fans, printing presses, pumps and shears. Bolting through pad mounts into a supporting floor requires a compliant layer under the bolt head and clearance around the bolt shank. This is to avoid a “short-circuit” for vibration energy through the bolt. Pads can be stacked to create a softer suspension and interleaved with metal plates to increase stability.
